The Institute of Medicine (IOM) predicts new infectious diseases such as SARS, H5N1, Pandemic and Swine flu will continue to emerge whilst known diseases spread to new geographical areas. Health workers play an important role in the initial recognition of these new diseases with approximately two-thirds of emerging infectious diseases being vectorborne or zoonotic diseases.
